These are colours that are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel whereby creating high contrast.

Alternatively, complementary colours are one primary colour and the secondary colour derived from mixing the other two primary colours.

For example, Purple, which is a mixture of blue and red is the complementary colour to yellow. Orange which is a mixture of yellow and red is the complementary colour to blue. Green which is a mixture of blue and yellow is the complementary colour to red.
