January 2020 Design Challenges

  • 1-Yard Abstract Landscape Wall Hanging | Entries Due by December 31

Let the great outdoors be your inspiration for this week’s design challenge, but think abstract! Rely on large swaths of color and texture to build a dreamy, deconstructed landscape worthy of any statement wall. Whether you choose to conjure a peaceful mountain range, a dark forest drenched in monochromatic shades or a serene, watercolor ocean scene, this week it’s time to think outside the repeat for a landscape that’s anything but a blandscape. Remember to think large scale this week as all entries will be previewed on a yard of fabric.

Entries will be previewed at the one yard size: 42” x 36”. Submissions close December 31 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 2. Winners will be announced January 9.

  • Black and White Painterly | Entries Due by January 7

Delicate washes of grey and the timeless pairing of dark and light take center stage in this week’s Black and White Painterly Design Challenge. Using black ink (digital or analog) as your source, create a seamless repeating pattern with the use of brushstrokes, implied visual depth and a degree of textural elements. Whether your monochromatic design has a light and airy feel or is firmly grounded, remember to use only black, white and shades of gray to achieve your modern painterly look. Keep the scale on the larger side as your design will preview to voters on a curtain panel render.

Entries will be previewed on a Spoonflower Curtain. Submissions close January 7 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 9. Winners will be announced January 16.

  • Art Nouveau Wallpaper | Entries Due by January 14

Meet us at the Paris Métro, and we’ll take a trip back in time to celebrate Art Nouveau design. Often inspired by nature, this 19th-century style reflects vine-like lines and artful, organic movement. Whether your artwork is a new take on a glamorous old-world lithograph or evokes decorative architecture, your repeating design will be previewed on wallpaper, so think large scale.

Don’t miss these tips for designing large-scale wallpaper.

Entries will be previewed on Spoonflower Wallpaper. Submissions close January 14 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 16. Winners will be announced January 23.

  • Vintage Kitsch | Entries Due by January 21

From plastic lawn flamingos to retro campers, we’re crazy for kitsch! While some might consider this design aesthetic to be tacky or gaudy, we’re challenging you to create a repeating pattern that’s equal parts vintage flair and fun. When creating your masterpiece, picture how someone might use your design in their home. We can already envision someone making cafe curtains in their vintage Airstream and cocktail napkins for their ‘50s inspired bar cart.

Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close January 21 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 23. Winners will be announced January 30.
