A KNITTER from Worcester has spent months making a life size model of the Queen to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Olive Allsup, 77, from Warndon Villages, proudly unveiled the painstakingly stitched, 5ft 6inches-high model at the Guildhall in Worcester today (Wednesday).

But visitors will have to be quick to admire the woolly Queen – whose human counterpart celebrates her birthday tomorrow (Thursday) – because she will be moved from the hall on Friday.

Mrs Allsup, who has knitted for most of her life, said: “It took me a couple of months, and it took three weeks to make the crown. The crown was the most difficult part.

“I think her nose is a bit bent – from one angle she looks like a boxer!”

The woollen sculpture will return in time for Worcester City Council’s Tea for the Queen event on Saturday, June 21.

Alongside Her Majesty is a knitted Land Girl, also created by Mrs Allsup for visitors to the tea party to enjoy.

Mrs Allsup, who previously ran Olive’s Wool Shop, in Bromyard, explained: “We thought because a lot of the people who are 90 will identify with the Land Girls and quite often, for a person that age, it will bring back good memories for them.”

The knitted Queen is on display today (Wednesday) and tomorrow at the Guildhall in High Street, Worcester.
