make a heart give a heart to stop bullying

The editor of Crochet World, Carol Alexander, alerted us to an inspiring project called The Peyton Heart Project. It has a sad beginning. The project is named after a 13-year-old who committed suicide after years of bullying. The group is asking crafters to make small hearts to raise awareness about bullying and its consequences. What happens to the hearts? Here’s what they say:

“We are leaving them in public places for people to find during their everyday lives. Currently, our hearts are being scattered in over 20 countries around the world. We hope the hearts cause people to stop for a moment and reflect on a young life lost to suicide, on bullying and on the fact that everyone’s life matters. We want to leave people with a feeling that there is still good out there in the world, and we would like to inspire others to join us on our mission of kindness.”

At this link you will find more information about the project and see images of the hearts.

Let’s see how many hearts our wonderful Talking Crochet readers can contribute to this very worthwhile cause! Carol has provided this pattern for a small heart.

To make a 2-inch heart, you’ll need 3 yards of worsted-weight yarn in a blue color and a size G hook. Why blue? Carol says, “I decided on blue because the associations for the color blue are trust, hope, confidence and faith. These are certainly attributes that we wish for anyone who feels insecure and hopeless because of bullying.”

The Purpose of this project
~We would like to help bring awareness to the issues of teen suicide and bullying.
~We are hoping to get people talking about these issues.
~We would like to show people that their life is worth living and that every life matters.
~We want to help end the stigma that is often associated with suicide.
